PURPOSE:To reduce working time and labor by mounting a collar member and a cylindrical spacer to both edge parts of a backup apparatus supporting a support. CONSTITUTION:After the upper surface of the end part of a web is pressed by a tab holding apparatus and the end part of said web is bent toward a non-coating surface, the edge part of a free falling curtain film 6 is supported by an edge guide 8b. Further, the free falling curtain 6 of a coating solution wider than the bent web to form a coating layer 10 on the web. The bent uncoated web edge part 21 passes through a coating zone and, thereafter, bending is eliminated by the recovery characteristics of the web itself. Further, bending can be held by a bending holder with respect to a web whose bending is rapidly eliminated during the passage through the coating zone. By this method, the non-uniform part in the vicinity of the edge guide is not coated and the generation of a non-uniform coating layer is eliminated.
