[Also in Division G3] Needle selection is achieved at each station on a multifeed circular machine by the provision of jacks 3 adapted to fulcrum in the cylinder tricks about their lower ends 3a and which are influenced by magnetic means to deflect them into or out of operative paths of controlling cams such that their butts 3' are caused to engage or disengage a raising cam 20, Fig.- 1, which raises the selected jacks and consequetly the corresponding needles 1 so that the latter are brought into engagement with their knitting cams. As illustrated in Fig. I, the needle cam track 6 has interposed a pivotable cam 15 which can be used to bring all of the needles into the knitting path. Needle selection by the jack occurs before the rising cam part 7, 7' and raises the needles so that their butts are landed on this cam part which further raises them to tuck height. A second pivoted cam 11 determines : whether the needles remain at this height or are raised to clear and knit under stitch cams 13 and 10. The jacks 3 are normally urged outwardly by springs 19 to engage the jack cam 20 as their butts pass along their guide channel 5, 5', 5". Prior to ,their engaging the raising cam 20 a spring rod 21 is influenced by, a maget to engage behind or in front of a cam 8, Fig. 15, which deflects or restricts the spring rods into or out of engagement with the jacks so as to move the jacks and their butts out of or permit them to continue in contact with their cams to effect the selection. The magnets are controlled, for - selection purposes in influencing the spring rods from a film photoelectrically scanned in a manner similar to that described in Specification 967818. The tracks on the film correspond to the number of knitting stations so that selection can be made at each feed. In addition a comparison is made between the machine speed and film speed to ensure synchronisation.</p>
