Solvent-based paint stripper (I), esp. (I) contg. soaps and/or surfactants, contains 0.5-5% of a 1-20% aq. soln. of natural saponins and, instead of pure saponin solns., mixed prods. of saponins and detergents and/or emulsifiers and/or wetting agents, in addn. to soaps, emulsifiers and/or conventional wetting agents. (I) is thickened to a gel by the combination of soaps, emulsifiers and/or wetting agents with saponin formulated with polar and apolar solvents. The gel intrinsically liquefies if the balance between apolar and polar solvents or between the solvent content and the soap-wetting agent-saponin mixt. is changed so that one or more solvents migrates into the paint. (I) contains 3-15% dearomatised hydrocarons, which promote penetration and gel formation. The soaps may be entirely replaced by emulsifiers and/or other synthetic surfactants to give an alkali-free, neutral (I); and the soaps and synthetic surfactants may be entirely replaced by natural saponins to accelerate biodegradation in purificn. plant. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) is universally useful, i.e. suitable for stripping various types of paint from both horizontal and vertical surfaces.
