PURPOSE:To obtain positional controllability having high accuracy and to execute recording and reproducing with high density and with excellent reproducibility by using the phenomenon that a tunnelling current flows when the distance between a probe electrode and a recording medium is shortened while a voltage is impressed between them. CONSTITUTION:The tunnelling current is very sensitive to the change of the distance and the surface structure of real space can be drawn by scanning the probe electrode 102 so as to keep the tunnel current constant. Simultaneously various kinds of information about a surface atom can be read. Therefore, one phase of the recording medium 101 having regular cycle structure that the phases of two kinds of compounds are taken as a constitution unit is detected and the recording is executed on the phase or the recorded information is reproduced. Thus, the recording with high density is realized and the recording and reproducing is executed with high reproducibility.
