[Also in Division D1] Novel aldehyde substituted hexahydropyrimidin-2-ones and thiones of the general formula wherein R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP>, R<SP>4</SP>, R<SP>5</SP> and R<SP>6</SP> are the same or different and are H or alkyl; R<SP>7</SP> and R<SP>8</SP> are alkyl, X denotes O or S and R<SP>1</SP> is H, alkyl or the group -CH 2 C(R<SP>7</SP>)(R<SP>8</SP>)CHO are prepared by reacting a cyclic urea of the general formula wherein R<SP>9</SP> is H or alkyl, with formaldehyde and an aldehyde of the general formula in the presence of an acid at a temperature of from 0‹ to 120‹ C., within 10% of the stoichiometric amounts of formaldehyde and aldehyde being used for each NH group to be substituted. |
