摘要 It is known to use phase change materials based on calcium chloride hexahydrate in low temperature heat storage systems. Additives to the calcium chloride hexahydrate affect its performance. To avoid problems experienced with prior art phase change materials, the present inventors add strontium chloride hexahydrate (in quantities upward from 0.1 per cent), fumed silica in the range from 0.02 to 1.0 per cent, and extra water above the stoichiometric quantity included in the calcium chloride hexahydrate in the range from 1.0 to 5.0 per cent. Other additives that may be included are sodium chlorite (in the range from 0.001 per cent to 1.0 per cent), ammonium chloride (up to 10 per cent), and potassium chloride (up to 10 per cent). (All percentages are by weight, with reference to the calcium chloride hexahydrate.) For improved efficiency of operation, a chemically inert colouring material, such as black drawing ink, may also be added to phase change materials enclosed in transparent containers.
