Powder in a cylindrical container 12 is fed into a gas stream at 32 by a disc 18 which is formed with elongated slots 23 and which is rotatable about an axis 19 offset from the axis 21 of the container, the diameter of the disc being greater than that of the container. The disc rests on narrow arcuate sections 43, Fig. 8 (not shown), in the base housing 42 which prevent the powder falling through the slots until the slots are aligned with the downwardly extending discharge duct 34, the diameter of which is equal to the width of the slots. The width of the slots is such that the frictional drag of the walls on the powder carries the powder forward with substantially no relative movement between the powder at the centre of the slots and powder adjacent the walls. The slot walls may be serrated or scalloped, Fig. 6a (not shown). The axes of the container and disc are inclined to the vertical, Figs. 1, 4 (not shown), and the powder enters the slots at the lowermost part of the disc where a tamping mechanism 72, 73, Fig. 6 (not shown), may be provided for tamping the powder into the slots. |
