A handgun is provided with a safety device to prevent the inadvertent actuation of the firing pin. The firing pin slides in a guide hole (2) in the breech (1) and has a head (7) which is struck by the hammer (23) when the gun trigger is a actuated. The firing pin is normally held in the safe position by a pawl (15) which is mounted on a pivot in the head (7) and engages a step (20) in the breech (1). When the hammer (23) is actuated it swings towards the end face (8) of the breech (1) and presses against the projecting end of the pawl (15) so that it is swung clear of the step (20).
