<p>The registration of items, particularly in order to reduce waiting time at the cash desks of self-service supermarkets, is achieved by providing each item with a microcircuit (24) which has a high frequency energy collection loop which transmits, in reply to an inquiry, a modulated high frequency message which represents an item's identifying signature. In order to register an item (20), its microcircuit is energized by the application of a high frequency inquiry and energy supply signal in order to prompt transmission of the modulated signature signal, the modulated signal is sensed by memory means which make the prices of the items correspond to the signatures, the price of the examined article is memorized and displayed, and the item's price is added to the prices of any items which may previously have been registered.</p> |
