The invention relates to p-phenylenediamines of formula: <IMAGE> (I) in which R1 denotes an alkyl, hydroxyalkyl or polyhydroxyalkyl radical and R2 denotes a hydrogen atom or an alkyl radical, as well as the corresponding salts with acids, and to the compositions and the process for dyeing keratinous fibers, especially hair, employing them.
