1494929 Making surgical instruments; welding by fusion PILLING CO 15 May 1975 [15 May 1974] 20672/75 Headings B3A and B3R [Also in Division E2] A surgical instrument such as a clamp 12, Fig. 1, includes a box lock joint 18 in which a portion 38 of limb 14 located between portions 32 and 34 of limb 16 is pivotable about a pin 44 extending through a hole in the portion 38 and fused to the portions 32 and 34. To form the joint, the limbs 14, 16, with the portion 38 located between portions 32 and 34, are held in a clamp, having fixed members 64, 64 and movable members 68, 70, while aligned holes are drilled in portions 32, 38, 34 to receive the pin and then the pin is fused by the use of electrode 78. A head end 46 of the pin, Fig. 6, is fused first and the limbs inverted for fusing of the second end. The base 62 is rotated via gearing (74), (76), Fig. 11 (not shown), during fusion. The end faces 58, 60 of the fused pin are ground and the instrument is hardened. |
