A process for the. preparation of antibiotic Megalamicin A, or of a pharmaceutically acceptable functional derivative thereof, comprises hydrolysis under neutral or basic conditions of a substrate containing at least one of the antibiotic designated Megalomicin B, Megalomicin C 1 and Megalomicin C 2 so as to convert these into Megalomicin A, and isolation of Megalomicin A or of a fraction enriched in Megalomicin A in free form or in the form of a functional derivative.
