This method consists essentially in calculating, for the picture to be realigned and for the reference picture: - a matrix of coefficients transformed by the two-dimensional, discrete Fourier transform and weighted; - discrete values of an energy function on rays (CB) uniformly distributed around the centre of the weighted matrix, - the discrete values of a cross-correlation function of the two energy functions, of the reference picture and of the picture to be realigned, for angular offset values corresponding respectively to the said rays (CB); - estimating a realignment angle value, by seeking the maximum of the cross-correlation function. A variant of the method furthermore enables calculation of a translation vector, in the case in which a picture is to be realigned both in rotation and in translation.
