A process for the production of alpha-methylstyrene polymer which comprises continuously polymerizing alpha-methylstyrene dissolved in an inert organic reaction medium at a concentration of from about 5 to about 20 weight percent which has been precooled to a temperature between about 0 and about -50 DEG C in the presence of water and a Friedel-Crafts halide at atmospheric pressure and substantially adiabatic conditions.
