An apparatus for pipe renovation, in particular for use in pipe renovation in existing underground systems such as sewer and waste water pipeline systems, comprising a hammer head 1 which, by means of a winch 30, is drawn through the existing pipeline 6 and breaks the latter in two and displaces the pipe broken in two out into the surrounding ground, and in which a new pipe 7 can be fastened to the hammer head 1 so as to be drawn through the existing pipeline 6 simultaneously, is described. A hammer head design of considerably reduced length and diameter which is considerably easier to control and also capable of being drawn backwards so that stopping work and drawing backwards is possible along the way has a hammer head 1 consisting of two components 10; 20, 200 fitting one inside the other, one component 10 having an external diameter which is smaller than the internal diameter of the pipeline, that is to say the internal diameter of the new pipe 7, and the other component 20, 200 being mountable on the end of the new pipe 7 and comprising externally a breaking surface which forms a transition surface from the front end of the hammer head 10, 32, 31 connected to the winch 30 and the outer surface of the new pipe 7, or the outer surface of the new laying duct.
