The main stack of sheets on a pallet is subdivided mechanically, and without handling, into smaller stacks by means of a lift to which a conveyor (8) is attached with a horizontal section adjusted to the level at which the main stack (6) is to be divided. The impeller (15) moved by an electric motor (63) and eccentric gear train (65) across the vertical path of the stack has an impelling vertical face with a sepg. tongue at its lower edge, level with or higher than the plane of the conveyor. The tongue tapers at its free end to a thickness not greater than 0.8 mm.
