1,209,044. Ammonia; chlorine. PRODUCTS CHIMIQUES PECHINEY-SAINT-GOBAIN. 7 Dec., 1967 [8 Dec., 1966], No. 55654/67. Addition to 1,098,361. Heading C1A. The process as in the parent Specification (wherein ammonia and chlorine are prepared from ammonium chloride by heating it in contact with a mass containing partially reduced iron oxide or manganese oxide and an alkali metal chloride to liberate ammonia and the residual mixture is oxidized with a free oxygen containing gas to liberate chlorine), is modified in that the oxidation of said residual mixture is carried out in an apparatus incorporating a plurality of fluidized beds separating a series of compartments in which the mixture being treated circulates in countercurrent to the free oxygen containing gas which both oxidizes the mixture and maintains it in a fluidized condition. The apparatus for the oxidation may be a tower of the type shown in Fig. 1, containing a plurality of perforated plates, as 6a, pipes, as 7a, through which material may pass from one fluidized bed to another, and inlets and outlets 2 and 3 for solids and 4 and 5 for gases respectively, and possibly an inlet 8 for recycling depleted gas. Chlorine-containing gas may be removed from the compartment wherein the chlorine concentration is highest, and, after removal of Cl 2 by suitable methods, the gas, with depleted chlorine content, may be recycled to a compartment of similar chlorine concentration, by an inlet 8. |
