摘要 PURPOSE:To provide a good memory effect and to lessen the decrease in contrast by an orientation defect by subjecting one of substrates to an orientation treatment and sealing a ferroelectric liquid crystal between the substrates, then regulating the orientation state by impressing an electric field. CONSTITUTION:Films 9, 10 consisting of a silane-coupling agent are formed on the glass substrates 1, 2 on which transparent electrodes 4, 5 consisting of ITO and insulat ing layers 7, 8 consisting of SiO2 are provided. The surfaces of these films are subjected to a rubbing treatment. Namely, the substrates 1, 2 are assembled in such a manner that the rubbing direction are 180 deg. above and below. The ferroelectric liquid crystal compsn. is sealed under heating between the substrates 1 and 2 and after the substrates are slowly cooled down to room temp., alternating waveforms of + or -25V and 15Hz are impressed between the electrodes 4 and 5 of the element for about 10 seconds. The orientation state of the liquid crystal, therefore, exhibits the uniform state accom panying a dense stripe-like structure in the direction nearly perpendicular to the layer direction and the zigzag defects formed at the time of the sealing and the cooling are removed. The good memory effect is obtd. by the bistable uniform orientation in this way and the degradation in the contrast by the orientation defect is lessened.
