PURPOSE:To facilitate alteration from an versions by updating the history from a hierarchy where an alteration is made to the highest order hierarchy automatically at the time of the alteration of data in a low-order hierarchy and the change of hierarchical structure. CONSTITUTION:A hierarchical information read/write function 204, a hierarchical information and version number display function 205, a version information read/write function 211, and a version information storage part 212 are provided and directories and data of respective hierarchies are stored; and version numbers of the directories and data are stored corresponding to names in directories right above them and the update of the directories and data is decided. Then when a directory or data is updated, the update of the directory and processing wherein the version number after the update is registered in the directory right above it are performed associatively from the hierarchy where the update is performed to the highest layer. Consequently, when the update is performed, the history from the hierarchy right above the hierarchy where the update is performed to the highest order hierarchy is easily varied.
