The use of a stable composition of fixed and stained white blood cells in a buffer/sugar/fixative resuspending medium as a scatter and absorption gain setting standard for a hematology instrument is disclosed. The invention is distinguished by the stability of the optical properties of the fixed and stained white blood cells over an extended period of time.
