One of two mutually relatively movable parts carries an optical digital code track and the other a detector with a light source and receiver connected to a measurement value interpolating signal processor. Binary code tracks (21-2n) arranged in the direction of the relative motion have individually associated detectors (31-3n). At least one analogue, vernier type track (41-4n) arranged adjacent to the digital tracks has a further dedicated detector (5,6). USE/ADVANTAGE - For measuring relative displacement of two mutually relatively movable parts e.g. for machining tool or as angle detector at acceleration pedal or throttle valve of vehicle DC engine. Enables intermediate values between digital track measurement values to be displayed.
