PURPOSE:To automate measurement and thereby to enable execution of an effective control by a method wherein the amount of change in a tail clearance is converted into an electric signal and computed. CONSTITUTION:A detecting mechanism unit A is fitted to a skin plate 2 of a shielding machine and the mechanism unit A is provided with a turning arm member 6, which is so designed as to be always restricted in a gap between a segment 12 and the skin plate 2 by the segment 12 constructed in a tail clearance, i.e. a shield tail part, of the shielding machine and to rub the outer peripheral surface of the segment 12. According to this construction, the amount (x) of change in the tail clearance is represented by the amount (y) of displacement of a base-end shaft part 61 of the member 6, and a displacement converter 13 of a clearance computing unit B connected to the base-end shaft part 61 by a wire 14 measures the amount (y) of displacement and outputs it as an electric signal. Then, a computing element 15 computes the tail clearance on the basis of an output signal of the displacement converter 13 and the result of computation can be displayed in a display unit 16. |
