Lateral release front jaws of a safety ski binding for holding the front end of a ski boot have a trunnion (30) attached to the ski, a release spring (13) arranged essentially in the longitudinal direction of the ski and a sole holder (29) which has two side legs (14) and a holding-down device (15) for the sole. The one-piece sole holder (29) is arranged rotatably on the trunnion (30) and vertically tiltably about a transverse axis (36). A slide bore (37') in a ball guide (37) inside the trunnion (30) is passed through by a connecting rod (38) which bears via a support disk (39), which is fastened to it at the rear, against an essentially plane rear support surface (40) of the trunnion (30). The rear end of the release spring (13) rests on a stop abutment (42) attached to the sole holder so that this stop abutment is pressed against the front support surface (31) of the trunnion (30). The rear support surface (40') of the trunnion (30) or the opposing surface (39') of the support disk (39) above the connecting rod (38) or the support surface (31') of the trunnion (30) or the opposing surface (42') of the abutment (42) below the connecting rod (38) are tilted, in relation to the vertical, on the surface of the ski (22) in such a manner that, within a predetermined height-tilting range (a) of the holding-down device (15), the holding-down force is clearly reduced in relation to the normal release holding-down force. ……
