The separation of water and isopropyl acetate from isopropyl alcohol, which falls off from Meerwein-Ponndorf reduction 2-acetamido-3-hydroxy-p-nitropropiophenone, is based on the production of ternary azeotrope water - isopropyl alcohol - isopropyl acetate. The condensed distillate forms two liquid layers. Water is eliminated by the removal of the heavier layer. Isopropyl acetate can be separated as an 80 percent concentrate by the separation of the organic phase from the condensed ternary azeotrope or by another distillation of the mixture that remains after the water separation as a binary azeotrope of isopropanol and isopropyl acetate, which contains 45 - 50 percent of isopropyl acetate.
