A memory-accessing device copies a single subroutine 450 from a ROM memory 400 into a RAM memory 410 and modifies the subroutine, to enable it to access all locations of a number of irregularly sized matrices 415, 425, 435, by changing the addresses contained in the subroutine in RAM in accordance with a list 440 of addresses stored in ROM 400. Use of a single routine conserves memory. The device may be a programmable remote control transmitter for e.g. a VCR, cable converter, video disc player or TV receiver. <IMAGE>
