An apparatus and method for providing communication of information between a truck tractor (12) and trailer (14) via existing truck wiring (30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 50). At least one transmitter (22) is located in each trailer (14) for generating a unique identification signal representative of trailer identification information corresponding to the trailer (14) in which the transmitter (22) is located, modulating the identification signal, and providing the modulated identification signal on an existing truck power bus (50) coupling the tractor (12) and trailer (14). A receiver (24) is located in the tractor (12) for receiving each modulated identification signal on the power bus (50), demodulating each modulated identification signal and providing each demodulated identification signal to a mobile communications terminal (26) located in the tractor (12) for transmission to a central facility (16). The system may further include the transmission of trailer status or load status information by the transmitter (22) to the receiver (24) in a similar manner as the trailer identification information.
