PURPOSE:To industrially advantageously obtain a high purity aralkyl ether by reacting an aralkyl dichloride with a lower alcohol in the presence of an alkali substance and bringing the reaction product into contact with sodium hydrogensulfite. CONSTITUTION:In producing an aralkyl ether useful as a raw material for phenolaralkyl resin (ZAIROKKU(R)) having excellent heat resistance, especially resistance to oxidation deterioration by reacting an aralkyl dichloride, preferably alpha,alpha'-dimethoxy-p-xylene with a lower alcohol in the presence of an alkali substance, the aralkyl dichloride is reacted with the lower alcohol and then brought into contact with sodium hydrogensulfite so that the aimed compound not containing an aromatic aldehyde which makes control of molecular weight difficult and has bad influence on hue of resin is industrially advantageously prepared by using inexpensive sodium hydrogensulfite advantageous in terms of cost. |
