A prepn. of high quality esters by reaction of alcohol and acid (anhydride) in the presece of a non acidic estest catalyst comprises vacuum-evaporating the esterificated reaction mixt. to obtain a crude ester, hydrolyzing the catalyst by adding a small quantity of water to the crude ester, neutralizing the ester with a basic cpd., and vacuum-evaporating it at 140 deg.C or less.
