PURPOSE:To facilitate the connection to an external optical fiber and to obtain the optical phase modulator which has small optical transmission loss by forming fiber guiding grooves in fiber positioning bases. CONSTITUTION:The fiber guide grooves 24 and 25 are formed on the fiber positioning bases 12 and 13 and respective terminal sides of the fiber guiding grooves 24 and 25 face other-end surfaces of waveguides 16 and 23. The fiber positioning bases 12 and 13, a distributor 14, and a synthesizer 15 deposite glass on a 1st substrate 11 by direct flame deposition method and the glass is etched by reactive ion etching method. In this case, optical fibers are only fitted in the fiber guiding grooves 24 and 25 of the fiber positioning bases and then coupled with the waveguides automatically, so the waveguides are easily connected to the optical fibers. |
