Rapid UV hardening system - for plastics coating on optical fibre

An UV hardening system, for surface protection of an optical fibre, includes an UV lighting system with an UV light source which concentrically surrounds the optical fibre. Pref. the energy for the UV light source may be provided in the form of electrode-free h.f. energy or as electrical energy supplied by electrodes (2,2'). Pref. the light source comprises a double-walled gas-filled discharge vessel (1) made of quartz, the gas filling being activated by microwaves pref. from a klystron or magnetron. USE/ADVANTAGE - The system is used esp. for hardening plastics coatings on optical quartz glass fibres. Rapid hardening is achieved.
