<p>A method is provided for ortho-alkylating phenol by passing a mixture of phenol and methanol through a heated magnesium oxide catalyst. The magnesium oxide catalyst is made by calcining magnesium carbonate and thereafter further heating the calcined product in the presence of steam.</p> |
