The invention relates to a process for joining together galvanized steel plates by means of gas-shielded arc welding. In the process according to the invention, toxic impurities and deformations in plates, as produced by a conventional welding, are avoided. The process is characterized by a combination of parameters in which the welding speed is >= 300 cm/min, the arc voltage is between 20 and 27 V and the current is >= 300 A. The burner is guided at a 5 - 10 degree butting angle and the rate of feed of the welding wire is >= 20 m/min. The diameter of the welding wire is 1 mm.
