Ammonium compounds of the formula <IMAGE> (I) in which R and R1 designate C1-C21-alkyl or C2-C21-alkenyl, R' designates hydrogen or C1-C4-alkyl, R2 designates C1-C4-alkyl or hydroxy-C1-C4-alkyl, R3 designates hydrogen or C1-C4-alkyl and A(-) represents an anion of the formula <IMAGE> (II) in which R4 designates hydrogen, C1-C4-alkyl or C1-C4-alkoxy and R5 designates C1-C4-alkyl or C1-C4-hydroxyalkyl, a process for their preparation and their use as softeners for fibre materials.
