PURPOSE:To improve the dependency on visual sensation and to eliminate the gradation inversion at the time of a black and white display and the gradation inversion in a color display by laminating a visual angle compensating means on a liquid crystal display element thereby constituting the liquid crystal display device. CONSTITUTION:The liquid crystal display cell 18 is constituted by including a liquid crystal cell 1 for display, a liquid crystal cell 2 for visual angle compensation, and a pair of polarizing plates 15, 16. The liquid crystal cell 2 for visual angle compensation is forming perpendicularly oriented films 11, 12 of an org. silane system on the respective opposite surfaces of a pair of glass substrates 9, 10 and forming a liquid crystal layer 14 in which liquid crystal molecules are perpendicularly oriented when a liquid crystal material is sealed between the substrates 9 and 10. The direction of the max. main refractive index of the liquid crystal cell 2 for visual angle compensation is, therefore, perpendicular to the glass substrates 9, 10, i.e. coincides with the major axis direction (optical axis) of the liquid crystal molecule of the liquid crystal layer 14. The display characteristics good over the wide range of the visual angles are obtd. in this way and the state in which the gradations are inverted at the time of display is prevented. The gradation inversion that the prescribed color display is not made is suppressed if this device is executed to the color liquid crystal display device to execute the gradation display. |
