PURPOSE:To prevent the rear part of a car body from being widely protruded sideways during the starting of a vehicle and to ensure safety by providing a regulating means to regulate the assist force of a steering mechanism to assist the steering force of front wheels when it is confirmed that a vehicle is in a starting state. CONSTITUTION:When front wheels are steered by a steering device the steering force of which is assisted by a power steering mechanism 6, the steering characteristics of rear wheels are changed at a predetermined car speed of, for example, 40km/h forming a boundary between a changed and an unchanged state. On the side where a car speed is higher than the above car speed, rear wheels are steered in an iso-phase with front wheels to improve high speed stability, and on the side where it is lower than the above car speed, the wheels are steered in an opposite phase to each other to improve short radius turn ability. In a control unit 7 of a so formed rear wheels steering device, a starting state detecting means 53 to detect it from an output signal from an ignition sensor 52 whether a vehicle is in a starting state is provided. When it is confirmed that a vehicle is in a starting state, the assist force of a power steering mechanism 6 is regulated by a regulating means 54. |
