For measuring or monitoring the condition, the boiling point, the thermal capacity or the thermal margin of a liquid, especially a brake fluid, a sample of the liquid to be examined is enclosed in a measuring chamber (2, 16, 24, 30) which has a movable wall in the form of the end face (5', 17') of a piston (5, 17, 26), a diaphragm (29, 29') or the like. By means of the action of force on this movable wall, a reduced pressure is generated in the measuring chamber (2, 16, 24, 30), which reduces the boiling point of the liquid to be examined and which leads to an expansion of the volume of the measuring chamber (2, 16, 24, 30) only when the liquid is heated to the reduced boiling point. The expansion of the measuring chamber is signalled and serves for the quality assessment of the brake fluid or as a measure for determining the so-called thermal margin. <IMAGE>
