An expansion dowel, in particular for fastening lightweight insulating panels on masonry walls, is composed of a sleeve which can be partially inserted into a bore and has a retaining plate (2) fitted at its outer end located outside the bore, and of an expansion pin (27) which can be inserted into the sleeve (1), from the outer end thereof, and expands said sleeve (1) which is longitudinally divided in the bore and is provided with a bore expansion region. In order to achieve a design which is simple to produce and is free of heat bridges, the invention provides a cover (42) which is intended for covering the sleeve (1) with the expansion pin (27) and lies at a distance from the retaining plate (2) and the sleeve (1), all the way around, in order, on the one hand, to provide a covering which is free of heat bridges and, on the other hand, permits ventilation. Locking takes place via locking hooks (57) on a retaining arm (43) which retains the cover (42) on the retaining plate (2). <IMAGE>
