摘要 PURPOSE:To improve the visibility of images and to obtain stable performance by rotating the polarizing plate provided in one of the optical paths of a liquid crystal cell to control the diffusion characteristic of the device. CONSTITUTION:The liquid crystal cell 8 is constituted by forming homogeneously oriented films 2, 4 which horizontally orient liquid crystal molecules 7 and homeotropically oriented films 1, 3 which perpendicularly orient the liquid crystal molecules on glass substrates 5, 6, disposing the oriented films 1, 3 to face each other and crimping a liquid crystal 9 therebetween. The liquid crystal cell 8 and the polarizing plate 12 are then combined, by which a liquid crystal focal plate is constituted. The polarizing plate 12 and a polarizing plate holder 13 are mounted rotatably with respect to a liquid crystal cell holder 11. The polarizing plate 12 is thereby rotated with respect to the liquid crystal cell 8. The polarization component ratio of the incident light on the liquid crystal layer or the exit light from the liquid crystal layer is, therefore, controlled if the polarizing plate is turned. The intensity distribution of the diffracted and scattered light is thus controlled. The visibility of the image is improved in this way even if this device is used for the finder of a camera, etc. The device having the stable performance is provided.
