An electroless deposition of a metallic silver comprises contacting a substrate with an aq. alkaline medium contg. a water solvble ionic Ag compsn. (I) capable of redn. to metallic Ag, and a reducing agent of formula R2-(CHR1)n-CH2OH for (I). In the formula, n is 2-7; R2 is COOH or CH2R1; R1 is OH, NH2, NHCH3, NHC2H5 or NHC3H7. The metallic Ag may be deposited on glass and plastic surfaces. The agent is stable in strong alkaline solutions.
