The ballast having a protection circuit of high voltage caused by the short of the secondary winding equips a residual light flush switch (S2) for lighting constantly. In abnormal state, like no-load operation, the secondary winding (r,w) induces the high voltage applied to a triac (TC1). The current flowing through the conjunctions (P1,P2) stops the switching function of transistors (TR1-2). The voltage at this time is applied to a capacitor (C2) so that the voltage is not applied to a transformer (TB). A capacitor (C7) and a resistor (R7) are for preventing the triac (TC1). A capacitor (C8) and a resistor (R9) are for absorbing the instantaneous shock voltage.
