PURPOSE:To reduce the rate of hydrolysis of a metal alkoxide and to increase the particle size of colloidal particles in the resulting sol by hydrolyzing the metal alkoxide in the presence of a specified reaction inhibitor. CONSTITUTION:Water is added to a metal alkoxide such as aluminum isoproxide by an amt. satisfying >=50 molar ratio of water to the alkoxide and a peptizer and an org. solvent selected among alcohols, benzene, ketones and formamides as a reaction inhibitor are further added. After hydrolysis, the resulting hydrolyzate is peptized by heating to the b.p. of the org. solvent to obtain a sol. |
