The invention relates to the preparation and use of DNA or RNA molecular probes which are labelled with 5'-bromodeoxyuridine or with other suitable modified base analogues, which have immunogenic activity, on the 3'-OH or on the 5'-OH end of the polynucleotide chain by enzymatic or chemical methods. DNA or RNA probes mean all suitable DNA or RNA polymers which contain either BrdUrd or other suitable modified base analogues in any number at the 3'-OH or at the 5'-OH end of their chain. It is particularly intended to protect the use of these DNA or RNA probes which are labelled with 5'-bromodeoxyuridine or with other suitable base analogues for hybridisation techniques, for solid-phase techniques and for use in the polymerase chain reaction. These probes are intended to be used for the diagnosis of agents causing infection, for detecting tumour markers, for detecting genetic diseases, mutation processes within cells and other DNA- or RNA-dependent processes in the cell by means of the abovementioned techniques.
