A display (12) and printer subsystem (19) for use in a sorting operation with sorting apparatus (10) in which information can be displayed and labels (5) printed for the categories of materials resulting from the sorting operation. The display (12) and printer subsystem (19) includes a microprocessor (20) which develops and sends address, data and external control signals over system buses (16), a plurality of display units (12), and a plurality of printer units (19). Associated with each display unit (12) is a manually operated switch (18) that causes the information displayed by the display unit to be printed. The program of the microprocessor (20) permits automatic selection of the relationship between the stored files and the sort parameters associated with the printer (19) and display units (12). This relationship can be determined by an operator. The display (12) and print subsystem (19) is described with particular reference to manual and automatic sorting of mail. |
