PURPOSE: To enhance catalyst activity, heat resistance or the like by depositing Ni or NiO at 0.1 to 50 wt.% in terms of Ni on a carrier consisting of superfine powder single crystal magnesia having an average grain size 100 to 2,000 Å, thereby forming the catalyst. CONSTITUTION: The high-purity superfine powder single crystal magnesia having the average grain size 100 to 2,000 Å and BET specific surface area 6 to 170 m<2> /g, nickel compd. and org. solvent are mixed and the nickel compd. is uniformly dispersed and deposited by an incipient wetness method on the surface of the magnesia carrier. A mixture from which an org. solvent is removed is then activated by a pyrolysis treatment at <=400 deg.C in an air stream. Further, the mixture is molded to pellets and thereafter the pellets are subjected to a first reduction treatment at 350 to 450 deg.C and a second reduction treatment at 600 to 750 deg.C in a gaseous hydrogen stream of a concn. 30 to 100%, by which the high-activity nickel based catalyst is produced. |
