The proposal is for an electro-hydraulic steering assister with a measuring device to detect the steering moment applied by the driver, an electronic control device (17), a hydraulic supply unit (1), a pilot valve arrangement (7) and a working cylinder (6) coupled to the mechanical steering gear, the working chambers (10, 11) of which can be pressurised depending on the steering direction, whereby the pilot valve arrangement is controlled by the electronic control device. In order to match the hydraulic assistance simply, economically and in the best possible way to the dynamic driving conditions, a proportional pressure control valve (4) is fitted in the connection between the hydraulic supply unit (1) and the working cylinder (6) which can be controlled by the electronic control device (17).
