PURPOSE: To manufacture a metal matrix composite body of excellent finish shape out of an inexpensive material by placing a non-reactive filler material in a cavity of an investment shell, and infiltrating the filler material. CONSTITUTION: A pattern 1 is formed of a wood 3 mounted on a trunk 2, and a cup part 4 is fitted to the trunk 2. The wood 3 is repeatedly immersed in a ceramic slip or slurry in a laminated manner, and ceramic powder is sprayed thereon to form a refractory investment shell 5 around the wood 3. When wax is melted and the wood 3 is removed, a cavity of a shape faithfully corresponding to the shape of a removable mandrel is left behind in the shell 5. The filler material is filled in the cavity and heated. When a matrix metal 8 is poured through the cup part 4, the metal is spontaneously infiltrated in the filler material 7, and after infiltration is completed, the shell 5 is cooled and removed. The metal matrix composite body corresponding to the pattern 1 can be removed from a residual carcass of the matrix metal. |
