The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for detecting bubbles leaving a hermetically sealed container under the effect of a leak, this container being immersed in a liquid. This method consists in applying an atmospheric pressure to the said hermetically sealed container in order to allow the production of bubbles 3 from a leak; allowing the said bubbles to pass through two optical fibres 11, 12, a light beam being emitted by one 11 of the said optical fibres and perceived by the other optical fibre 12, whilst being scattered under the effect of a difference in density between the said liquid and the said bubble 3 when the said light beam is transmitted through the said bubble, and a part of the said beam being received by the said other optical fibre 12; and detecting the quantity of light thus received, in the form of an electrical signal. <IMAGE>
