Process for continuously drying a substance. The temperature of a substance is adjusted to less than the boiling point of the substance at atmospheric pressure. The substance is introduced into a vacuum chamber and conveyed through the vacuum chamber without supplying heat. After that, the dry substance is removed through a lock. The process can be carried out using an appliance which comprises a member for adjusting the temperature of the substance, a supply member 8, 10 for introducing the substance into a vacuum chamber 12, a vacuum chamber, a transport member 112 for conveying the substance to the vacuum chamber and a lock 24. The process and the appliance can be used for drying substances which are sensitive and/or difficult to solidify. <IMAGE>
