When a predetermined output pressure is exceeded in known arrangements, the idling phase, in which no compressed air is to be delivered, is brought in by the compression chamber (3) being connected to the suction chamber (4) via a valve arrangement (17) which can be activated by the output pressure. A disadvantage in this respect is that in the idling phase which is thus brought in, and in which compressor work is performed via the admission valve, a considerable amount of energy is consumed. The novel arrangement is intended to ensure that the energy requirement of the compressor in the idling phase is reduced, but without adversely affecting the suction power in the delivery phase. A nonreturn valve (18) is provided with which the suction chamber (4) can be shut off, at least during the idling phase, with respect to the suction line (21) of the compressor. The nonreturn valve (18) can be used in compressed air generators in which, in the idling phase, the compression chamber (3) is connected to the suction chamber (4) and the delivery side is shut off with respect to the consumer. <IMAGE>
