The surface of a moulded thermoplastic polymer substrate is restored after conditioning by a strong oxidising or reducing agent and/or mechanical abrasion by exposure to solvent vapours. Claimed solvents are CH2CL2, CHCL3, CCl4, trichloroethane, trichloro(m)ethylene, O- dichlorobenzene, acetone, MEK, cyclohexanone, ethyl acetate, dimethylacetamide, n-methylpyrrolidone, or DMI. The polymers are e.g. (I) polyarylates, esp. from a dihydric phenol and an aromatic dicarboxylic acid, a polyester, or a polyaryl ether, (II) a polyetherimide, (III) an aromatic polycarbonate (pref. from a dihydric phenol and a carbonate precursor), or a poly(ester carbonate); the polycarbonate is esp. from bisphenol A and COCl2 or disphenyl carbonate.
